Now, I know y’all went and watched my house video from last week. Right?

And today, just because it’s Tuesday, I’m going to show you a few “before” pictures from our first day in the house. This will kind of give you an idea of what it looked like when we got it, and hopefully, I’ll give you a little glimpse on what we hope to do with it. Eventually.

As you may have noticed in the video, we got rid of the rugs, pronto. They were really worn and I felt a little squeemish about bare feet on old rugs. We are still trying to rid ourselves of the giant entertainment center. It works for our ancient TV right now, but we’re refraining from putting anything else on it, because it’s going buh-bye. Soon.

You may remember that I mentioned that we’re going to get a sectional sofa soon. That’s a post in and of itself, but we are waiting to do that until we paint the living area since trying not to get paint on a new couch is not my idea of a good time. So meanwhile, we still have the futon. And the pretty coffee table that works great as a foot rest as well. Not that I would know from personal experience, mind you.

We’re not all that attached to the white paint on the walls, so the goals is to paint the living/kitchen area, as well as the hallway a soft gray. We haven’t quite decided what shade of gray yet, so I’ll keep you posted. Some of you may wonder, Why gray? The basic reason: we want a neutral color that we can accent with different colors, and we don’t want a blah tan color. Or white. And black is a little imposing. Here’s an idea of what we’re thinking about.

moving on to the kitchen…

As you can see, we were definitely just moving in. But immediately after unpacking the car, we switched a few things up. First of all, we moved that little island thing over to the left corner of the kitchen and flipped down the breakfast bar side. It’s on these great little wheels, so when I need extra counter space in the kitchen, I can roll it over, but it lives out of the way when I don’t need it. This little move opened our kitchen way, way up. The picture below shows the paper towel holder and knife block still on the island, but we have since taken them off. Obviously, I’m a bit delinquent on the picture-taking thing.

We definitely want to paint the cabinets, and we’re leaning toward white. It’s hard to tell from the picture below, but due to several big trees in the backyard, the house is pretty dark most of the day. I don’t mind it a bit, since it makes it rather cozy in here, but we want to lighten it up a touch. We just have to decide on a white color that will look ok with the countertops. Painting the island thing as well will definitely tie that in with the rest of the cabinets.

The last little tweak we’ve made has to do with the fridge, but you’ll have to check back later this week. Let’s just say, it’s one of the best little switch-ups we’ve done so far.

Thumbs up or thumbs down on the island move? Has anyone else painted a room gray and loved {or hated} it? By the way…it’s about time for another Coffee Chat, isn’t it? Think colored leaves and yummy foods. Check back tomorrow for the topic!
